The Palace of Illusions

           - Chitra Banerjee

Ratings- 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

The Palace Of Illusions is Indian mysticism based on Mahabharata from the point of view of Panchaali. The novel portrays today's war-torn world. All the events in the novel revolve around Panchaali and her actions. Panchaali or Draupadi had a very unusual birth, she was born out of fire. Her stars were mysterious. She knew via astrology that her marriage wouldn't be a normal one and she would be the cause of the great war against humanity.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni has beautifully carved feminine aspects in this patriarchal society. Panchaali is shown as a lady with very normal characteristic as of today’s women. She had Karna the rival of her husbands as her secret admiration. With Krishna she had a sweet relationship, with no name. The common desire to look attractive persist in her, and her feeble attempts to please her mother-in-law is laid.

Draupadi was the uncommonest of women having five husbands. The culture of a male having several wives persist but the opposite was unheard of. She was the first women to shatter this. She agreed to be divided between 5 men.

The Pandavas and Kauravas shared blood-rivalry. In the mid of this Draupadi had to suffer miseries. Later situations reversed. She made the palace of illusions people from places came to visit. It was a wonder of architecture. Its glory fascinated friends and furiated enemies.. The Shakuni mama’s game took the royalties away and Draupadi’s respect in front of the sabha. Provoked by this, she cursed the men of a great war which would take all their loved ones away.

Losing all their wealth in the game of ‘ chaugan ‘ the pandavas went for a vanavaas. They prepared themselves for war. The great Kurukshetra war took place with Krishna and Arjun on one side and Dronacharya, Duryodhan and Karna on the other.

Karna is another character in the story who is actually fighting for the so called wrong people. His dilemma occurs when Kunti reveals her secret to him. He cannot kill Arjun because of his promise to Kunti and cannot betray his friend Duryodhan as well. The war broke spirits, the Pandavas had a victory with no survivors.

Draupadi though had not actually fought the battle but her presence in most of the vital happenings of the war is a little difficult to absorb. The story never ends it seems that the muted love of Draupadi and Karna continue somewhere in the heaven among the uncertain mists away from the clutches of society that both were in.

She dies as the cold snow as if waiting for the warmth from her Karna.

Why should you read The Palace of Illusions?

- It is exciting to read Mahabharata from the perception of the person who was solely responsible for the great war.
- Panchaali has redefined there messaging of Women for the society.
-  It is fun to see the way from the third point of view, as Panchaali was unable to take sides.
-  Karna and Panchaali's untold & incomplete love story bleeds the heart of its readers. .
